Mandarine Chinese

The language has 1.1 billion speakers, 897 million whom are native speakers. The Mandarin language is often referred to as “Chinese” but is actually part of a group of related languages.

English

The English language has 983 million speakers, 371 million of which are native speakers and 611 million are non-native speakers. Although the English language is related to German, Dutch and Frisian, it has been heavily influenced by other languages. Much of the English vocabulary is Latin in origin, after being introduced by the French-speaking Normans who conquered Britain in the 11th century A.D.

Hindustani

The language has 544 million speakers, of which 329 million are native speakers and 215 million are non-native speakers. Hindustani is the collective name for Hindi and Urdu which refer to two dialects of the same language. Although Hindi and Urdu have some differences when it comes to vocabulary and pronunciation the speakers of either language are able to easily communicate with one another.

Spanish

The language has 527 million speakers of which 436 million are native speakers and 91 million are non-native speakers. The Spanish language is also referred to as Español or Castellano and is sometimes referred to as “Castilian” because it originated in the Castile region of Spain. Spanish is the second most-common language in the United States, home to 40 million native speakers. This makes the U.S. the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. It is predicted that within the current lifetime the U.S. will overtake Mexico and become the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.

Arabic

The language has 422 million speakers of which 290 million are native speakers. The language originated on the Arabian peninsula and has since spread all across the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is also the language of Islam, which is practiced by an estimated 1.2 billion people. 

Malay

The language has 281 million speakers, of which 77 million are native speakers. The name of the language is Bahasa Melayu. It is the largest of the Austronesian languages, which is a language family that is thought to have originated in Taiwan.

Russian

The language has 267 million speakers with 153 million are native speakers and 113 million are non-native speakers. Based on the numbers of native speakers, Russian is the most spoken language in Europe. 

Bengali

The language has 261 million speakers of which 242 million are native speakers. It is also the second most widely spoken language in India.

Portuguese

The language has 229 million speakers of which 218 are native speakers. Originally, Portuguese evolved from Latin into its own language off the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, what is now known as Portugal and the Spanish Province of Galicia. From there, colonization spread the language into other countries.

French

The language has 229 million speakers of which 76 million are native speakers and 153 million are non-native speakers. French is also spoken in parts of Western and Central Africa and in the French overseas department of French Guiana of South America.
