Archives: Harvest 2018 & December 2016

Discover Grgich hills archives from past harvest years. The best wineries in Napa can all agree, harvest has been a success yet again!

Harvest 2018 Update

Ivo Jeramaz, our winemaker, quotes this as a miracle harvest and yield! We have not received this kind of yield since 2010, and the temperatures have been beautiful for picking.

Our vineyard team begins harvesting grapes at midnight and through the night; this night picking helps keep the grapes cool which is important to maintain acid levels and prevent any premature fermentation. In the morning our cellar team receives the grapes on the crush pad where the journey to the bottle begins at the winery.

Many members of the team have been with us for five, ten and twenty-four harvests here at Grgich Hills. We thank the cellar team and the vineyard team for their astounding work, dedication and long hours they put in to make this vintage possible. The team makes it possible to call Grgich one of the best wineries in Napa.

Vintage report: December 2016

Jorge Nave carefully tops Merlot barrels, replacing wine that has naturally evaporated.

Our late harvest 2016 Violetta continues to progress nicely through fermentation. In the cellar, we continue monitoring the red wines as they begin to undergo malolactic fermentation. As individual lots finish this secondary fermentation, we rack the wine out of barrel, cleaning them and then returning the wine to the clean barrels for further aging.

The vineyards are slowly entering their winter slumber; the only activity right now is cover crops have sprung up, thanks to recent rains.
